McGonigal Makes his Marks

Just read on Todd Swift’s Eyewear blog that James McGonigal won the Michael Marks pamphlet award for his new chapbook Cloud Pibroch. Huge congratulations to him and to Hamish Whyte of Mariscat Press — himself a poet. I confess I haven’t read Jim’s pamphlet yet, but to judge from the last time I heard him read, he has been undergoing something of a late flowering. Rob A Mackenzie has read it and told me recently that it was excellent, which I well believe.

What pleases me most about this award is that it means highly deserved UK-wide recognition for a poet who has been working away quietly but significantly in Scotland for years. On top of that, Jim is just such a lovely man that you can’t but cheer heartily when he has a moment of such glory. He also happens to be the author of Beyond the Last Dragon: A Life of Edwin Morgan, the first biography of our late lamented makar.
